The Manali to Kaza route usually opens from June until October. In 2026, the Manali side opened during the first half of May for 4×4 vehicles. If you want to complete the full circuit, including Kunzum Pass and Chandratal, plan your trip from mid June onwards.

Which Route Should You Take?

Shimla to Kaza via Kinnaur

This route is around 420 to 430 km and usually takes two days. Most travellers spend a night in Sangla, Kalpa or Nako before continuing towards Kaza. The road gains altitude gradually, allowing your body to adjust naturally. Since it doesn’t cross major high-altitude passes on the first day, it’s the best option for first-time visitors.

Manali to Kaza

This route is around 200 to 225 km but still takes about 8 to 10 hours because of rough roads, water crossings and changing weather. You’ll travel through the Atal Tunnel before crossing Kunzum Pass, which sits at an altitude of 4,550 metres. Although shorter, this route is much more challenging. For first-time visitors, the best option is to enter Spiti from Shimla and return through Manali.

Altitude Sickness

Most of Spiti Valley lies above 3,600 metres. Altitude sickness has nothing to do with fitness. It depends on how quickly you gain altitude. The best way to avoid problems is to travel slowly, stay hydrated and avoid heavy activity on your first day. If you develop a headache, nausea or shortness of breath, stop climbing and rest instead of pushing ahead.

Permits in 2026

Indian citizens do not need a permit to visit Spiti Valley. You can also use the Atal Tunnel without any permit. Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit, which can be obtained from the SDM Office in Shimla or Reckong Peo.

Cash, Mobile Network and Fuel

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Late May to Early June

The Shimla route is open while the Manali side is just reopening. Weather remains cold and tourist numbers are low. Chandratal may still be inaccessible.

Mid June to August

Both routes are open. Chandratal is accessible. This is the busiest travel season.

September to Early October
