Tungnath & Chandrashila Trek
Chopta, Rudraprayag District, Uttarakhand
Group Tour
3 Days / 2 Nights
Max 20 guests
About this tour
Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world, sitting at 3,680 metres, and Chandrashila – the peak just above it – is one of the few places in the Himalayas where a genuinely easy trek gets you a genuinely hard to reach view: Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Trishul, all in one 360 degree turn. The whole thing is only 5 kilometres one way from Chopta, doable by a reasonably fit beginner in a single push, which is exactly why it’s one of the most rewarding short treks in India per kilometre climbed. This trip drives up from Rishikesh or Haridwar, sleeps two nights in Chopta’s meadows, and gives the trek itself an entire dedicated day – no rushing, no cutting the summit short.
- Depart Rishikesh/Haridwar for Chopta
- Drive via Devprayag and Srinagar, with a breakfast stop en route
- Continue on to Rudraprayag, then Ukhimath

Yes. It's widely considered one of the most accessible Himalayan treks in India - 5 km one way from Chopta with a well-defined stone-step trail. The final 1.5 km to Chandrashila is the steepest section and needs a slower, steadier pace.
Tungnath Temple sits at 3,680 metres, and Chandrashila Peak, the final summit, is close to 4,000 metres.
No - July and August see slippery trails and occasional landslides on this route, and summit views are usually fogged out. May - June and September - October are the recommended windows.
Basic fitness is enough for most people. The trek takes 4-5 hours up including rest breaks, and the descent is quicker. Altitude affects some trekkers regardless of fitness level, so pacing and hydration matter more than speed.
Outside monsoon, yes - Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Trishul are visible on a clear day. Cloud cover can occasionally block the view, more so during the rainy months.
